M.I.A. – Matahdatah Scroll 01 “Broader Than A Border”

Bashment, Dance, Hindi, Hip Hop, R&B, Rap, Reggae, Tamil, UK, UK Asian, Video

Score: 8.1

Maya is back in full effect with this stunning (kinda) new video. Comprising of banging new song “Swords”, then morphing into a genial album track “Warriors” (taken from her 2013 album “Matangi”), it’s fascinating when melded with the visuals. She’s the embodiment of female empowerment, and the anticipation for her new album is building. Partnering with *Apple Music is an interesting strategy that seems to be reaping dividends for Drake, so let’s just hope that Maya’s “Matahdatah” comes soon. (Reviewed by Jesal)

*FYI this was originally released in July but was an Apple Music exclusive.

Arjun – “Same Girl” (featuring Guru)

Hindi, Pop, R&B, Tamil, UK, UK Asian

Score: 7.7

Here is the brand new, entirely original track “Same Girl” for your viewing pleasure:

Oh, I’m sorry. Easy mistake to make though… Our shiny new globetrotting star – it must be said – shamelessly delves into a track that has been done before (not just by R Kelly & Usher, either). In fairness, he “met this girl only last Saturday” – if we take that literally, Arjun could only have known her for a maximum of nine days. Why so upset? I mean nine days or less. Be cool, dude. Aside from the general neediness of modern men, this is a pleasing track. Arjun’s production is relatively sparse, with a subtly addictive guitar melody. It’s understated enough to let the focus remain on the two singers: the main man is on fine form here, and thankfully the over-compression/layering of his vocals isn’t on display here, with a more personal delivery working well on the verses. Guru is clearly letting Arjun take the lead, and plays his supporting role very well indeed. It might not be particularly original, but it’s a track that has an incredibly high replay value, which bodes well for his forthcoming album. Good stuff. (Reviewed by Rahul)

Tell me more, tell me more about this girl
She seems to be a little too familiar
All the things that you’ve been saying ’bout her
Remind me of my own, of my own lover

She makes it look so simple
I’m telling you she’s one of a kind

GURU

With the same girl and she’s playing us both

We’ve been playing the same song
And it’s time we set this straight once and for all

Tere naal dil raat rahan mein
Jiva te tere naal maran mein

Are you lying next to him
Are you loving the same, loving the same
I only live for you
Girl I would have died for you
Are you loving him the same?
We’ve fallen for the same, same girl

Loven – “Lost” (Featuring Arjun)

Burban, Dubstep, Hip Hop, R&B, Rap, Remix, Tamil, UK Asian

Score: 7.0

There is something missing in this otherwise quality effort from Loven. The beat bumps hard; golden boy Arjun delivers a solid chorus; the breakdown is superb; the concept is timely and well-executed; even the video takes welcome risks. So pretty much everything is there. However, something is holding Loven back when it comes to delivering his hard-hitting lyrics: there is a reticence in his voice, even as he drops jewels such as “We need to pass the pound, instead we pass the buck…” It’s not a deal-breaker, but it does prevent an otherwise cleverly-constructed “Lost” from eclipsing the raw, visceral fervour of its predecessor, “Breathe.” When delivering vocals, the only thing to be afraid of is fear itself – once Loven has “Lost” that sense of apprehension, he can start to truly move onto the next level. Arjun – “Why This Kolaveri Di” (Remix)

Burban, Classic, Hindi, Pop, R&B, Remix, Soul, Tamil, UK Asian, Video

SCORE: N/A

Seeing as Arjun’s remix of “Why This Kolaveri Di” has become a career-defining moment for him, it’s only appropriate we post a reminder and a heartfelt congratulations on reaching 5 million YouTube views. Stunning. (Posted by Jesal)

M.I.A. – “Bad Girls”

Arabic, Burban, Hip Hop, R&B, Rap, Tamil, UK Asian

SCORE: 8.1

The journey of M.I.A. has taken her from Acton/Sri Lanka (Arular), to all around the world (Kala), subsequently marrying the heir to a billionaire and having a child (Maya) and finally to bonafide global superstar. If any further confirmation were needed, just watch the SuperBowl halftime show tonight – she appears alongside Nicki Minaj and Madonna, an extraordinary feat that nobody would have dared to predict 8 years ago. Back in her own right, the precursor to her forthcoming album is the incessantly catchy “Bad Girls” produced by Danja. The Romain Gavras video (shot in Morocco) is perhaps one of the most overblown and visually arresting in recent memory, making Lady Gaga’s visuals look like they were recorded on a Flip. Danja’s production is, of course, reminiscent of his collaborations with Timbaland circa 2006, all Arabic strings, flutes and pomp, and Maya herself just repeats baiting catchphrases, beating you over the head until you submit. It’s sexy, empowering and gutsy. Just like M.I.A. herself. (Reviewed by Jesal)

Bad Girls - Bad Girls - Single

LYRICS:

Live fast, die young- Bad Girls do it well (x4)

My chain hits my chest
When I’m bangin’ on the dashboard
My chain hits my chest
When I’m bangin’ on the radio

Get back, get down
Pull me closer if you think you can hang
Hands up, hands tied
Don’t go screaming if I blow you with a bang

Sukhi Sukhi / I’m coming in the Cherokee / Gasoline / There’s steam on the window screen/ Take it, take it / Wheels bouncing like a trampoline / When I get to where I’m going, gonna have you trembling

Live fast, die young, Bad Girls do it well (x4)

My chain hits my chest
When I’m banging on the dashboard
My chain hits my chest
When I’m banging on the radio

Yeah back it, back it/ Yeah pull up to the bumper game/ Read the signal/ Cover me, cause I’m changing lanes/ Had a handle on it/ My life, I broke it/ When I get to where I’m going, gonna have you saying it

Live fast, die young, Bad Girls do it well (x4)

My chain hits my chest
When I’m banging on the dashboard
My chain hits my chest
When I’m banging on the radio

Get back, get down
Pull me closer if you think you can hang
Hands up, hands tied
Don’t go screaming if I blow you with a bang

Go into bitch, yeah I’m seeing four million / Accelerating fast, I can do this in a second / Looking in the rear-view, swaggin’ going swell / Leaving boys behind, cos it’s leaving just to kill / Shift gear automatic, damned if I do / Who is gonna stop me when I’m coming through? / What we’ve got left is just me and you / But if I go to bed, baby, can I take you?

Get back, get down
Pull me closer if you think you can hang
Hands up, hands tied
Don’t go screaming if I blow you with a bang

Live fast, die young, Bad Girls do it well (x8)

Loven – “Breathe”

Dubstep, Hip Hop, Rap, Tamil, UK Asian

Score: 8.3

A fascinating effort from Loven provides one of the highlights of 2011. The searing dubstep beat is produced by Charles Bosco (usually a pair of safe hands) alongside Loven, and a one minute intro acts as the perfect curtain-raiser from the Tamil MC to spit. He’s a decent enough lyricist, but in fairness this a track that trades on drama, feeling and intangibles so the words are less important than his voice. Vocally, he comes across as naturally affable and he meshes into the instrumental brilliantly. It all syncs up perfectly, and – helped by a creative video – everyone involved can be mighty proud. And then you realise it’s a free download. One for the radio, gym, club, car, headphones, anywhere, anytime.
