Dream Warriors – “Small Bump” (Ed Sheeran cover)

Burban, Hip Hop, Pop, R&B, UK, UK Asian

Score: N/A

He may hate us for saying it, but Raxstar is so fucking good at rapping about girls right now, it’s almost scary – and his breakthrough truly seems to be within touching distance. Whatever happens, this cover of “Small Bump” works very well indeed. (By Rahul)

Jai – “One Last”

Pop

Score: 5.2

It’s strange. We’d heard fair amount of hype about “One Last” but now that it’s arrived, we have to admit to being slightly underwhelmed. It’s certainly got various qualities, but they just don’t seem coherent enough, and they don’t gel particularly effectively. The chorus is decent, but the verses are a bit weak. The vocals flit between being sticking and slipping. The production has the right melody but the wrong engineering, and so on… Jai seems like a nice fella, but “One Last” ends up a bit of a missed opportunity. (Reviewed by Raman)

RTP – “Tujhe Maan Loon” featuring Kishan Amin & Priti Menon

Hindi, Pop

Score: 7.1

A strong offering here from RTP – that’s Rax Timyr Productions – underscoring a lovely, lilting duet between Amin and Menon. The male lead (Amin) actually has a unique timbre to his voice, and in the future, this should be brought out (not subdued, as occasionally it is here). There’s nothing wrong with being unconventional, as Priti Menon has proved so admirably over the last couple of years, and the joining together of these two artists makes perfect sense. The song itself is, as one would expect, a solid modern Hindi love song – nothing spectacular, but enjoyable nonetheless. In fact, the only aspect we’re slightly disappointed by is the somewhat lacklustre drumkit – it’s missing that touch of crispness. It’s truly a minor complaint, and “Tujhe Maan Loon” will certainly please the intended market, all the while aiding the ascension of the two singers themselves. (Reviewed by Sohail)

Rita Morar – “Piya”

Hindi, Pop, Soul, UK Asian

Score: 7.0

If you basically ignore the nicely shot performance video, and opt in favour of focusing solely on the song itself, “Piya” is an interesting number from a fascinating talent. Rita Morar is an artist with a God given talent (and we do not say that lightly). She’s sings equally well in different languages, but also knows how to inflect those vocals with a raw, overpowering emotion, seemingly at will – when she sings in English, yet in a Hindi style, that’s when our spine really tingles (we’re sure that Abi Sampa must be a fan). After all that, however, it must be noted that the quiet storm beauty of “Piya” needs assistance when it comes sequencing. There is a beauty in brevity, and the chorus is simply repeated too often, meaning that we can’t help feeling it is a touch overdone. It feels barbaric to simply state the chopping a minute off this song would increase our affection for it, but when all the other parts of it have functioned so admirably, it genuinely does come down to something so basic. Still, there is so much to admire here – moreso with Rita Morar than “Piya” perhaps, but it’s essential listening nonetheless. (Reviewed by Jesal)

Anjulie – “You And I”

Canadian, Dance, Pop

Score: 4.8

Imagine a big budget version of Jaya’s hilariously insane visuals for “Outta Control” and you could well end up with “You And I” – one of the worst videos in recent memory. From the otherwise talented Anjulie, it’s an absolute disaster, complete with slobbering PDA’s, random acts of villainy, off-kilter dancing, an acoustic guitar being played in places where there is literally no acoustic guitar being played, a half-done hair dye, and an ass-grabbing callous disrespect for road safety… Honest to God, by the end you’re rooting for the police to just shoot (or at least taser) Anjulie and her hired in model. As for the song, the poor production only serves highlight the poorly written verses and poor chorus. Anjulie is usually far better than this (“Brand New Bitch” was solid enough). But then, at 3m45s, the video stops (thank fuck) and cuts to the singer, with her guitar, beautifully singing a stripped down version of “You And I” – and suddenly it all just works. This would surely have done much better way to go (imagine a Track & Field/Nelly Furtado ’00 vibe). It just goes to prove: you can have a record deal, tracks with Nicki Minaj and Cassie, a VEVO account… But one can never legislate for the poor decision-making, and we suspect Anjulie was probably told what to do here. Priyanka Chopra – In My City (Featuring will.i.am)

Dance, Pop, R&B

Score: 3.9

Another high budget hot mess. Priyanka Chopra stalks Shakira from afar, hires in will.i.am and subsequently seems hell bent on destroying the whole universe through this abomination of a song. This is just entirely pointless, and if there is any justice in this world, “In My City” will probably sink without a trace relatively soon. No excuse. (Reviewed by Sohail)

Arjun – “Same Girl” (featuring Guru)

Hindi, Pop, R&B, Tamil, UK, UK Asian

Score: 7.7

Here is the brand new, entirely original track “Same Girl” for your viewing pleasure:

Oh, I’m sorry. Easy mistake to make though… Our shiny new globetrotting star – it must be said – shamelessly delves into a track that has been done before (not just by R Kelly & Usher, either). In fairness, he “met this girl only last Saturday” – if we take that literally, Arjun could only have known her for a maximum of nine days. Why so upset? I mean nine days or less. Be cool, dude. Aside from the general neediness of modern men, this is a pleasing track. Arjun’s production is relatively sparse, with a subtly addictive guitar melody. It’s understated enough to let the focus remain on the two singers: the main man is on fine form here, and thankfully the over-compression/layering of his vocals isn’t on display here, with a more personal delivery working well on the verses. Guru is clearly letting Arjun take the lead, and plays his supporting role very well indeed. It might not be particularly original, but it’s a track that has an incredibly high replay value, which bodes well for his forthcoming album. Good stuff. (Reviewed by Rahul)
