Swami Baracus – “Hyper”

Burban, Dubstep, Grime, Hindi, Hip Hop, Rap, UK Asian

Score: 7.2

The first time you hear “Hyper” – the new Swami Baracus joint – you may well wonder what the hell is going on. The production just sounds weird, Swami B is spitting so fast at times that basically fuck knows what he’s actually saying and you’ll pretty miss out on 90% of what is on offer. However, once you accept the challenge of delving into the track, it swiftly takes shape and turns into a pretty impressive offering. The sample is subtle but inspired, and Kami K’s beat has a charming “Street Fighter II” feel to it (one could fully expect to see Chun Li or Ryu pop up in the video); the Barracuda gets his Busta Rhymes on, and is one of the few MC’s who could pull this off – that second verse is bewitchingly brilliant in its throwback feel. It’s the kind of song that is event-specific: that is to say, it would be awesome in certain situations like FIFA ’14, listening to whilst running (I can testify personally on that one) and, perhaps, in a club DJ set. If it is an indication of the quality level of Baracus’ forthcoming mixtape/album (“The Recipe”), then everything seems to be ticking along quite nicely. You can buy “Hyper” here.
