Beatboxer Ekko – “Elevation”

Burban, Dubstep, Grime, Hip Hop, Rap, UK Asian

SCORE: 7.1

It’s bizarre to think that “Elevation” is the debut of Beatboxer Ekko, considering he’s been around a relatively substantial amount of time. Yet, the posse cut is the first full offering from the young beatboxer and he hires in a variety of talent to help get him off to a flying start. The good news is that Ekko manages to deliver on his promise, as the combination of traditional production, beatboxing and the roster of talent all works to make “Elevation” a solid, albeit safe, debut. The instrumental has a touch of a “2 Unlimited (2012)” feel to it mixed with the subtle vocal skills (in truth, his part should be a touch more prominent), and it has a real kick to it. First up to spit is RKZ, with his delivery having the perfect amount of cockiness (plus his singing is a necessary touch to the track as a whole); Swami Baracus predictably kills the track dead – he’s in the form of his life right now, and you get the feeling that a great album from him would cement his place as the ‘Rakim’ figure of the Asian rap landscape; Raxstar drops a truly brilliant verse, from start to finish (he already sounds like a ‘signed’ rapper with efforts like this); Strikey (always better on higher tempo beats) actually does a pretty good job with his part; Dutty Mouth sounds raw as hell and brings a unique energy to the track; and GT Solo finishes proceedings with a solid enough job, although it may have made more sense to switch places with the more anchor-like Dutty Mouth. All in all, everyone pulls together to make “Elevation” a debut track that Beatboxer Ekko will be able to look back at with pride. (Reviewed by Rahul)
