As we suspected with his previous offering (“Play the Piano”), Sam Khan has finally started improving at a rate where we can start to see him “make it.” And make no mistake, “Back To My Old Ways” is further proof of this. It certainly isn’t the perfect song, but it’s a brutally effective vehicle for Khan to flex his lyrical muscles on. It’s also (thankfully) far removed from his 2010 Drake obsession: this is straight grime, which we still believe is the most comfortable weapon in his arsenal. When he glares at the thought of being compared to other Asian MC’s (“cos I’m better than them all…”) it’s not just bragging – it’s actually starting to come true. Well, over grime anyway. He’s still got a long way to go in terms of learning about the subtleties and intricacies of hip hop, but he’s most definitely on the right path. Exciting.
