Sam Khan – “Play the Piano”

Grime, Hip Hop, R&B, Rap, UK Asian

Score: 7.2

We here at SuperCritic believe that Sam Khan is one of the few “Most Likely To” British Asian rappers that could potentially make it. But up until “Play the Piano” we were still hedging our bets. Finally, he has displayed the right mix of lyrics, flow, content and charisma, meaning the end result is a song that you can comfortably relate to. It’s not going to save the world, it’s not even the best he can do, but it gives a tantalising glimpse into his future. You still get the feeling that whilst he’s creating a movement with B Somebody – incredibly admirable and 9 times out of 10, the right thing to do – an MC like Khan might just be better off on an established label that knows how to extract the best artistic substance out of him. Whilst he may get there himself, it still appears to be a race against time – but “Play the Piano” is most definitely a step in the right direction.
