There are two notable criticisms of “Down” that simply gift themselves on a plate: firstly, the sparsity of the verses, and secondly, Lil Wayne’s unintelligible guest verse. Aside from those gripes, it is impossible not to be moved by such an infectious and joyful ditty from Jay Sean, who has completely outdone himself. It’s just such perfect pop fare: you can dance to it; it contains suggestive lyrics wrapped up in an innocent, but commanding, delivery; and you will not be able to get it out of your head. Having been in the USA when this song burst out into the lead, it’s easy to see why it was the anti-Black Eyed Peas summer anthem, and Jay has certainly “broken” that mythical land, through perseverance and hard grit. But it’s his undeniable energy, in every sense, that has been the secret of his success. A classic.
