It’s somewhat depressing to reflect back and realise that this is one of the sole highlights of Asian girl groups. They seem to join up in a blaze of glory, do a track and dissolve. Here, Rouge piggybacked on a stunning beat (officially accredited to Dr Zeus, lol) and the immediately arresting “Don’t Be Shy” was the result, with everything working almost precisely as it should. You have three girls – one of whom won beauty pageants – and all of them can sing to varying levels. The instrumental is brilliant, and the suggestive but coquettish lyrics made girls want to be them, men want to be with them. It’s one of those magical moments that sprung out of nowhere, and it’s telling that already, every year brings another (and always inferior) remix, because nobody else has bettered the original, which is a classic.
